Celebrating International Black Aviation Day

February 16th marks International Black Aviation Day (IBAD), a holiday established in February 2022 by former Flight Attendant Casey Grant to highlight the achievements of Black pioneers in aviation. One of the first African American flight attendants in the United States, Casey is also the author of award-winning books, including, “Stars in the Sky”, which chronicles her journey and the stories of other Black pioneers in aviation. We have previously had the opportunity to interview Casey on the Envoy blog, where she shared her remarkable journey and insights into the importance of diversity and inclusion within the aviation industry.

This year, to celebrate IBAD, Casey Grant worked with Bessie Coleman’s great-niece, GiGi Coleman, to host an event at the Bessie Coleman Branch Library in Chicago. The event was held on February 10, where they welcomed students from the Charter School of the Dunes, as well as special guest Ken Rapier, a member of the Chicago “DODO” chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen and Chief Pilot for their Young Eagles Program. Ken has been recognized with the Tuskegee Airmen Central Regional President’s Award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Tuskegee Airmen.

Together, Ken, Casey and GiGi engaged the students with inspiring presentations about the courage, resilience and determination of Black aviation pioneers. They shared personal stories, historical insights and lessons on perseverance, encouraging the next generation to dream boldly and pursue careers in aviation and beyond. The event not only celebrated the legacy of those who broke barriers but also reinforced the importance of representation and opportunity in shaping the future of flight.
