For more than 21 years, Flight Attendant Elizabeth Bonner has made caring for others the foundation of her career. Whether she’s assisting passengers onboard, supporting fellow flight attendants through difficult situations or serving as a trusted resource for her colleagues, Elizabeth approaches every interaction with compassion, professionalism and a genuine desire to help.
That commitment to others is one of the reasons she was selected as a recipient of the 2025 Envoy President’s Award. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has built a reputation for exemplifying the values that make Envoy a great place to work.
Below, Elizabeth shares the lessons she’s learned over two decades with Envoy.
What inspired you to pursue a career in aviation? Can you tell us about your career path and what led you to your current position?
My sister worked for Continental Airlines in the 1980s, and I loved hearing about her experiences and was especially intrigued by non-rev flying. After she retired, I began looking for an opportunity to work for an airline myself.
As fate would have it, American Eagle Airlines, now Envoy, is where I landed. That was more than 21 years ago, and I can honestly say I still love my job. The opportunity to travel and meet people from all walks of life makes this an incredibly rewarding career.
What do you believe sets your approach to work apart from others?
One of my guiding principles is to remember that people may be dealing with challenges that aren’t immediately apparent. I believe in giving everyone the benefit of the doubt.
This is especially important for flight and cabin crews. Being away from home can create unique challenges when personal or professional issues arise. Creating a supportive environment helps everyone succeed. At the same time, maintaining a strong focus on safety and professionalism ensures we continue to provide the best possible experience for our customers and each other.
Are there any memorable moments or significant milestones in your career that stand out to you?
One of the most meaningful milestones in my career was being selected to serve as an Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) Employee Assistance Program representative. I was raised to help others and be there when people need support, so this role feels like a natural extension of who I am.
As a flight attendant, helping passengers is an important part of the job. Having the opportunity to also support fellow flight attendants has been incredibly rewarding and has brought even greater purpose to my career.
During my time at Envoy, I’ve also earned several professional credentials, including Department of Transportation Qualified Substance Abuse Professional, Certified Employee Assistance Professional, Nationally Certified Addiction Counselor I, Labor Assistance Professional-Certified and Critical Incident Response Program certifications. These experiences have allowed me to better support employees during some of life’s most challenging moments.
How do you stay motivated and maintain high standards in your work?
Knowing that my coworkers trust me to help them navigate difficult situations motivates me every day. Whether someone needs guidance, support or simply someone to listen, I want them to know I’m available.
What is your favorite part about working at Envoy?
The people. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside so many individuals who genuinely care about one another. Those relationships are what make Envoy such a special place to work.
What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
Our workforce is made up of people from many different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Learning to see situations through someone else’s eyes has been one of the best lessons of my career.
Are there any hobbies or interests outside of work that you’re passionate about?
I love growing flowers and plants and find a lot of joy in gardening. In addition, I have three cats and five grandchildren who keep life fun and fulfilling. Before joining Envoy, I served as the executive director of a Boys & Girls Club. I still enjoy keeping up with many of the former club members and seeing how they’ve grown and succeeded over the years.
