Envoy recently welcomed students and representatives from Breaking Down Barriers (BDB) to our headquarters campus in Irving, Texas for a day of learning, mentorship and hands-on aviation experiences designed to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals.
Co-founded by former American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, Breaking Down Barriers is dedicated to removing the barriers that prevent talented students from pursuing aviation careers by providing mentorship, education and access to flight training opportunities for students from underrepresented and underserved communities. Their mission aligns closely with Envoy’s commitment to creating pathways into aviation and supporting workforce development across the industry.
Learning About Opportunities in Aviation
The day began with breakfast and a warm welcome from the Envoy team. Envoy President and CEO Pedro Fábregas opened the event by sharing a phrase often heard around the company: Envoy is committed to hiring “the best of the best.” Building on that message, Breaking Down Barriers Co-Founder, Doug Parker emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for everyone, noting that “you can’t get the best of the best if not everyone has a chance.”
Envoy Vice President of Flight Operations, Ric Wilson shared an overview of Envoy’s operation, including the airline’s growth, network and role within the American Airlines Group. He also highlighted the Envoy Cadet Program and how it helps aspiring pilots navigate the journey from flight training to a future career with American Airlines.
One of the highlights of the day was the announcement of a new Cadet school partnership between Envoy and Spartan Flight Academy’s Grand Prairie campus.
Students were there to witness the signing event, which represents another step toward expanding access to aviation education and training opportunities for future pilots.
Conversations with the Pros
Throughout the event, Envoy pilot recruiters joined students at their tables for informal conversations about flight training, airline careers and life in the flight deck.
The discussions quickly became interactive, with recruiters pulling up airport diagrams and traffic flow maps on their iPads to explain how pilots navigate complex airport environments. Students were encouraged to ask questions, and the one-on-one conversations gave them a chance to learn directly from those working in the industry today.
Hands On Behind The Scenes
The experience extended beyond the conference room with guided tours of Envoy’s facilities. Led by Envoy Flight Training Director, Allen Hill, students explored classrooms, Virtual Procedure Trainers (VPTs), the virtual reality training lab and flight attendant cabin trainers. Participants also had the opportunity to experience VR technology firsthand and ask about this new immersive aviation training technology used by Envoy employees.
Of course, no visit to Envoy headquarters would be complete without a stop at System Operations Control (SOC). Led by Envoy Vice President of Systems Operations Control, Robert Nault, the tour gave students a look inside the operation responsible for coordinating Envoy’s flight schedule of more than 1,000 daily flights. From monitoring weather and aircraft movements to managing operational challenges in real time, students learned how teams across the SOC work together to keep flights moving safely and efficiently.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Before heading home, students received Envoy model aircraft as a reminder of their visit. More importantly, they left with a better understanding of the opportunities available in aviation and connections with professionals who were eager to share their experiences and advice.
