Lewis University Students Get an Inside Look at ORD Operations

Envoy recently partnered with a third party American Eagle carrier to give Lewis University Aviation students an inside look at regional operations at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). During the tour, students from the university’s Flight and Aviation Administration programs had the opportunity to explore the airport, learn from aviation professionals and gain firsthand insight into the coordination and teamwork required to keep a busy airport running safely and efficiently.

The visit began with a tour of Terminal 3, where students explored the concourses and learned about the various airport operations that support daily flights. The group discussed how taxiways, ramp alleys and other areas of the airport work together to support smooth and coordinated aircraft movement and ground operations. Students also visited the former ramp tower in Concourse G, offering a unique look at another part of ORD’s operational history.

The experience continued on the ramp, where students got an up-close look at an Envoy-operated Embraer 175 (E175) aircraft. During a guided aircraft walkaround, students learned more about the aircraft and its role in providing safe and reliable regional air service. They also had the opportunity to step inside the flight deck and explore the cabin, providing a closer look at the aircraft and the many details involved in preparing for a flight – from the flight deck to the cabin, maintenance operation, operations teams and beyond.

Throughout the visit, volunteers from Envoy shared their knowledge and experiences with participants, answered questions and helped students connect what they are learning in the classroom with the realities of working in the aviation industry. From airport operations to flight operations and customer service, the tour highlighted the many teams and career paths that contribute to a successful operation.

By bringing students directly into the airport environment, Envoy and our American Eagle colleagues helped provide a meaningful, hands-on learning experience for the next generation of aviation professionals. Opportunities like this strengthen connections with university aviation programs, encourage career exploration and showcase the people and teamwork behind American’s regional operation in Chicago.
