Two Voices, One Minute: Celebrating Black History Month

Each February, Black History Month offers a chance to reflect, learn and celebrate the stories that shape our shared experience. Across Envoy’s network, employees honor the month in ways that reflect their communities, backgrounds and personal journeys.

To highlight these voices, we’re sharing a special combined “60 Second Interview” featuring two employees from different corners of the operation. In these quick spotlights, CherylLynn Nyack and Malachi Kersey, talk about how they celebrate the month, what keeps them motivated in their roles and the goals they’re striving toward—both in their careers and in their lives outside of work.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?

In Grenada, Black History Month is intertwined with our Independence celebration on Feb. 7. It’s a mix of cultural expressions honoring African heritage, resilience and sovereignty. We wear national colors—red, green and yellow—and communities decorate with the same vibrant palette. Food competitions featuring our national dish, Oil Down, take place across the island.

What do you love about your job?

I love meeting people from all over the world. The travel perks are a plus, and no two days are the same. Airports have a unique energy, and I enjoy collaborating with gate agents, baggage handlers, flight crews, ramp teams and operations staff to keep everything running smoothly.

If you were not in the aviation industry, what job would you do?

I’m not sure—I’ve always dreamed of working in the airline industry. After more than 23 years, I’d do it all over again.

What makes you proud?

When a frustrated customer walks away saying, “Thank you, you really helped,” that is a moment worth being proud of. Every boarding pass, rebooking and problem solved helps connect families, businesses and dreams. Every problem I solve helps connect families, businesses and dreams.

Tell us one or two things on your bucket list.

One of my top destinations is Singapore—a futuristic yet green city with rich cultural diversity and incredible food. I’d also love to experience one of the world’s best airports, Changi.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?

I enjoy watching historical Black films and documentaries and researching the contributions Black innovators have made to our country.

What do you love about your job?

The people I work with are incredible. I also take pride in knowing I help customers get safely to their destinations. As an aircraft mechanic, maintaining excellence is my top priority.

If you were not in the aviation industry, what job would you do?

From civilian aviation to military aviation and back again, I’ve always been in this field. Aviation has blessed my life and given me experiences I couldn’t have found anywhere else.

What makes you proud?

Knowing I am a valuable asset to my team and safely releasing aircraft for flight.

Tell us one or two things on your bucket list.

I want to become an aircraft maintenance supervisor with Envoy and retire at 55. After that, I’d love to travel across the country with my family.
